Bananas Foster is a legendary New Orleans dessert featuring warm, caramelized bananas bathed in a rich butter, brown sugar, and dark rum sauce over vanilla ice cream . Watch our step-by-step video guide below to master these elegant treats at home.

🍳 Step-by-Step Cooking Instructions

  1. Build the Base: Melt the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a 12-inch stainless-steel skillet over medium-high heat. Stir and swirl for about 2 minutes until it becomes a grainy, bubbling liquid.
  2. Caramelize the Bananas: Place the bananas cut side down into the skillet. Cook for another 2 minutes , swirling gently, until the sauce transforms into a smooth caramel.
  3. Add the Rum: Pour in the 1/4 cup of rum. Safety reminder: Never pour straight from the bottle if cooking over an open flame.
  4. Ignite (Flambé Option): Tilt the pan slightly to catch the gas flame, or carefully light the edge with a long match. Shake the pan gently until the flames extinguish naturally and the sauce thickens to a honey-like consistency (1 to 2 minutes ).
    • Non-Flambé Alternative: Simply skip the ignition and simmer the mixture until the alcohol taste cooks off and the caramel reaches that same rich, honey thickness
  5. Flip and Serve: Turn the bananas cut side up. Immediately transfer to plates alongside your favorite ice cream, spooning the warm caramel sauce over the top.
