🛒 Ingredients for Bananas Foster
🍳 Step-by-Step Cooking Instructions
- Build the Base: Melt the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a 12-inch stainless-steel skillet over medium-high heat. Stir and swirl for about 2 minutes until it becomes a grainy, bubbling liquid.
- Caramelize the Bananas: Place the bananas cut side down into the skillet. Cook for another 2 minutes , swirling gently, until the sauce transforms into a smooth caramel.
- Add the Rum: Pour in the 1/4 cup of rum. Safety reminder: Never pour straight from the bottle if cooking over an open flame.
- Ignite (Flambé Option):
Tilt the pan slightly to catch the gas flame, or carefully light the edge with a long match. Shake the pan gently until the flames extinguish naturally and the sauce thickens to a honey-like consistency (1 to 2 minutes
).
- Non-Flambé Alternative: Simply skip the ignition and simmer the mixture until the alcohol taste cooks off and the caramel reaches that same rich, honey thickness
- Flip and Serve: Turn the bananas cut side up. Immediately transfer to plates alongside your favorite ice cream, spooning the warm caramel sauce over the top.
📝 Recipe Notes & Pro Tips
- Flambé Safety First: Always turn off your stove's burner or take the pan completely off the heat before pouring in the rum. This prevents sudden flare-ups. Keep a tight-fitting lid nearby just in case you need to smother the flames early.
- Banana Texture: Keeping the bananas "ripe but firm" is the secret to success. Fully ripe or overripe bananas will turn mushy and break apart when flipped in the hot caramel sauce.
